Dr. Zongjie Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut (UConn). She is also the Associate Director of the Eversource Energy Center for Grid Modernization, Workforce Development, and Industrial Educational Training. Before joining UConn, she was post-doctoral research associate in Systems Engineering at Cornell University from 2018-2021.
Education
- Cornell University, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Joint Ph.D. Program (Non-PhD Degree Training);
- Harbin Institute of Technology, China, Electrical Engineering, Ph.D., M.S., and B.S..
Research Interests
Dr. Wang is recognized for her innovation in optimizing hybrid T&D operations and for her impactful research on DER behaviors and market dynamic integration. She has been lead-PI of multiple projects in the center funded by the DOE, NSF, Eversource Energy, national labs, ISO-NE, and MISO, with an overarching aim of enhancing the power grid’s reliability and resilience. On March 19, 2024, Dr. Wang has been selected for the prestigious OPTIMA award for the TRANSFORMATIVE project, with a grant of $4.5 million from the Department of Energy. On July, 2024, Dr. Wang has been selected for the DOE GARCI award for the WISPR project, leading the R&D effort to enhance the grid resilience in the northeastern U.S. electric grids.
Dr. Wang is deeply committed to addressing global renewable energy integration challenges and implementing practical solutions to enhance power grid reliability. Prior to UConn, Dr. Wang spent over six months with the Ministry of Energy in Accra, Ghana, focusing on enhancing power quality and reducing outages through improved grid infrastructure planning and market dispatch. This experience highlights her commitment to addressing global renewable energy integration challenges. As General Chair of the 57th North American Power Symposium (NAPS) she will bring NAPS to UConn in October, 2025, giving it a focus on students, academics, and workforce educational & training. Since 2021, she has mentored many UConn undergraduates to publish research papers (including achieving best paper awards) and helped them secure long-term career positions in the industry such as ISO-NE, Electric Boat, and Eversource. As a core contributor to our center’s Grid Modernization Graduate Certificate, she has developed and delivered courses for this program and received top evaluations (5/5) from students, including industry professionals, for their practical relevance.
Dr. Wang is a senior member of IEEE. She has been a member of the PEEC steering committee, IEEE PES Subcommittee, IEEE Smart Buildings, and Customer Systems, IEEE Bulk Power System Operations Subcommittee, IEEE PES Renewable Systems Integration Coordinating Committee, IEEE PES Power & Energy Education Committee (PEEC), Association for Information Systems. She has been serving as an editor for Scientific Reports under Nature, and many other Guest Editors on different journals. Dr. Wang also has many collaborations with academia, industries, software vendors, consulting companies, utilities, indepedent system operators (ISOs), etc.
